Slight increase in number of foreign travelers crossing Ldtvia's border this year

 According to data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) on border crossings in the first half of 2012, foreign travelers crossed the Latvian border 2.55 million times, which is 1.5 percent more when compared to the first half of 2011.
The travelers who spent more than one day in Latvia, stayed here an average 3.5 days.
73 percent of the foreign overnight travelers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, while 27 percent stayed with their relatives or friends. 35 percent of the overnight visitors were in Latvia for the first time.
The majority of the foreign travelers were from the neighboring countries: 35 percent from Lithuania, 18 percent from Estonia, eight percent from Russia, six percent from Sweden, four percent from Germany and four percent from Poland.
36 percent of the overnight foreign visitors mentioned recreation as the main purpose of the visit, 31 percent mentioned business and 22 percent - visiting friends or relatives.
According to the CSB, 25 percent of the overnight visitors obtained information on Latvia from the Internet, 20 percent - from relatives, friends and acquaintances, 15 percent - during their previous visits and business trips, six percent - from travel guides and the mass media.
Out of all overnight foreign travelers who crossed the border of Latvia in the first half of 2012, 46 percent used air transport, 32 percent - motor transport, 13 percent - sea transport and nine percent - rail transport.
In the first half of 2012, foreign visitors spent LVL 175.1 million in Latvia, which is 0.7 percent more than in the first half of 2011 (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditure on execution of the employer’s instructions and capital investments).
Overnight travelers spent on average LVL 59.5 per day (in the first half of 2011 - LVL 54.8).
The largest amounts in Latvia were spent by travelers from Russia – LVL 24.4 million, Sweden – LVL 19.4 million, Norway – LVL 12.5 million, and Germany - LVL 12.2 million.
