Number of tourists visiting Jurmala increases 12% in H1

RIGA, Aug 27 - The number of tourists visiting Jurmala increased 1.2 percent in the first six months this year as compared to the same period in 2012, as Jurmala City Council's Public Relations Department informed LETA.

In the first quarter, the number of tourists visiting Jurmala grew 10 percent and in the second quarter it increased 15 percent.

According to the Central Statistical Bureau's data, 22,827 people stayed in Jurmala's hotels and hostels, the figure rose to 37,090 in the second quarter, therefore the combined figure for the first half-year is 59,917 tourists.

31 tourists visiting Jurmala are residents of Latvia, 30 percent come from Russia, 10 percent from Estonia, 7 percent from Lithuania, 4 percent from Belarus, 2.5 percent from Finland, and 2 percent from Poland, Germany, Sweden and Norway each.

The number of Russian tourists visiting Jurmala in the first and second quarters has increased 26 percent, the number of Polish tourists has increased twofold and of Lithuanian tourists 30 percent.

The overall period a tourist spends in Jurmala is three days.

Most tourists who visit Jurmala stay at sanatoriums and hotels, Tourists from Latvia, Russia and Finland prefer guesthouses, whereas tourists from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Finland - camping sites.

The average hotel occupancy rate was 40 percent in the first half of the year, reaching 50 percent in June.
