Number of visitors serviced at Latvian accommodation establishments up 11.3%

A total 772.3 thousand visitors stayed at Latvian tourist accommodation establishments in Q2 2018, which is 11.3 % more than in Q2 2017.

Compared to corresponding period of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors increased by 8.8 %, reaching 1.43 million in 2018. The average length of stay comprised 2 nights, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.
 

Over Q2 2018, 538.3 thousand foreign visitors were hosted, which is 8.7 % more than in Q2 the previous year, whereas the number of nights spent by them increased by 9.6 %, reaching 1.02 million nights. The majority of foreign visitors came from Germany (71 thousand), Russia (60.5 thousand), Lithuania (49.1 thousand), Estonia (40.2 thousand), Finland (33.8 thousand) and the United Kingdom (29.4 thousand).
 

In Q2 2018, significant increase was observed in the number of visitors coming from Ukraine (43.7 %), Austria (26.7 %), Japan (22.4 %), Poland (22.2 %) and Switzerland (20.7 %). A drop was observed in the number of visitors coming from Sweden (5.1 %), Norway (4.2 %), Finland (3.1 %) and Netherlands (3.1 %).
 

Out of the total number of foreign visitors, 29.8 % or 160.4 thousand came from the neighbouring countries of Latvia – Russia (11.2 %), Lithuania (9.1 %), Estonia (7.5 %) and Belarus (2 %).
 

Out of all foreign visitors, majority (77.9 %) stayed in Riga, 8.2 % – in Jūrmala, 1.7 % – in Liepāja, 1.6 % – in Sigulda County and 1.5 % – in Daugavpils.
 

In Q2 2018, 234.1 thousand Latvian visitors were hosted at tourist accommodation establishments – 17.7 % more than during Q2 2017, but the number of nights spent increased by 7.1 % and comprised 416.9 million.
 

Latvian residents stayed mostly in Riga (27.4 % of visitors), Jūrmala (8.4 %), Liepāja (7.5 %), Daugavpils (4.3 %), Ventspils (2.7 %) and Sigulda County (2.4 %).
 

Over Q2 2018, 483.6 thousand visitors were hosted at tourist accommodation establishments in Riga – 9.6 % more than during Q2 the previous year. The number of foreign visitors in Riga rose by 6.5 %, amounting to 419.5 thousand. The majority of foreign visitors hosted in Riga came from Germany (13.3 %), Russia (9.6 %), the United Kingdom (6.4 %), Lithuania (6.4 %), Finland (6.3 %) and Estonia (6.0 %).
