ZURICH (Switzerland), Dec 5 - Latvian national men's floorball team defeated the Czech Republic 5-4 (2-4, 1-0, 2-0) in the decisive Group C match at the World Floorball Championships on Monday, finishing on top of the group.

Although Latvia had already qualified for the quarterfinals before the game, if Latvia finishing second in the group the team would most probably have to play Finland, the current world champions, in the quarterfinal game.

Also, this is the first time that Latvia defeats one of the world's top four teams at a world championship.

Mihails Kostusevs scored two goals for Latvia, and the other three goals were scored by Ingus Laivins, Martins Rajeckis and Janis Jansons. Goaltender Indrikis Silins was named the best player on the Latvian team yesterday.

As reported, on Sunday Latvia defeated the United States 8-3, and beat Japan 11-1 on Monday.

Two best teams in each group will advance to the championships' quarterfinals.

Latvia is currently ranked 5th in the world floorball rankings, the Czech Republic is ranked third, Japan is ranked 13th, while the United States is ranked 15th.

The Latvian team has finished in fifth place in each of the last three World Floorball Championships.
