The Latvian national team beat Demark 3:0 (0:0, 1:0, 2:0) in their first match at this year's Ice Hockey World Championships on Saturday.

Miks Indrasis excelled with two goals and Gints Meija scored the third goal, while Latvian net minder Elvis Merzlikins warded off all attacks by the Danes.

This is only a second time in 20 years that Latvia start a world championship with a victory.

This will be the first World Championship at the helm of the Latvian team for head coach Bob Hartley.

Latvia is in Group A together with Denmark, Russia, the United States, Sweden, Slovakia and Italy.
