Vike-Freiberga reelected to board of International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims

 RIGA, Nov 15 - Yesterday in the Hague, former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga was reelected to the board of the International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry.
Vike-Freiberga, who was nominated by the Latvian Foreign Ministry, was the only candidate from the Eastern Europe group. The Foreign Ministry points out that this speaks about the former Latvian president's professionalism and successful work on the International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims.
The International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims is made up of five members from five of the world's largest regional groups.
The Trust Fund for Victims assists victims and affected communities of crimes addressed by the International Criminal Court. It was created in July 2002 when the Rome Statute entered into force, thereby establishing the Court. The drafters of the Rome Statute made a commitment to end impunity and bring to justice those most responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The Trust Fund for Victims was established to empower, assist and return dignity to the many victims affected by these horrendous crimes.
