Merkel tells Latvian president she highly values the work PM Dombrovskis has done![]() The president told members of the press after a meeting with Dombrovskis today that the German chancellor asked him to give Dombrovskis her personal greetings. ''She said that she appreciates the work Dombrovskis has done,'' Berzins said. Asked whether during the meeting he did not receive Germany's support for Dombrovskis' candidacy for European Commission president, Berzins replied: ''We will see when we actually get to this matter in the future''. As reported, as 2014 approaches, when the next European Commission president will be selected, Dombrovskis' name is becoming more frequently mentioned in the discussions. The German newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine" recently wrote that even though current European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso can run for another five-year term in office, it is likely somebody else will be selected. As one of the potential candidates, the newspaper mentioned current Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis. According to information obtained by LETA, lobbying for Dombrovskis behind the scenes at the European Parliament has been quite active recently. leta.lv 31-10-2012
