RIGA, Dec 7 - The Union of Greens and Farmers is considering collecting signatures for proposing a referendum on Latvia's accession to the eurozone, MP Dana Reizniece-Ozola (Greens/Farmers) told the LNT morning show "900 sekundes" today.
The party's main argument is critically low public support for the introduction of the euro - 3 percent. "This is also the opinion of knowledgeable economic experts. Among all candidate countries, only Latvia currently wants to join the eurozone," said the politician.
Reizniece-Ozola pointed out that the government's performance is not very efficient in the euro adoption process, and it will place a huge burden on the shoulders of local governments.
Greens/Farmers will vote against the euro implementation bill, envisaging specific tasks for state institutions and local governments for the euro to be introduced on January 1, 2014. If Saeima passes the bill, Greens/Farmers will urge the president not to promulgate it.
Greens/Farmers, however, are not sure about the president's decision, since he believes that the euro should be introduced in Latvia. Therefore the party is considering collecting signatures for staging the euro adoption referendum, said Reizniece-Ozola.
As reported, on December 5, Greens/Farmers MPs meet with Bank of Latvia President Ilmars Rimsevics and became even more convinced that the community is not ready for the euro come January 1, 2014.
They underlined that the Bank of Latvia failed to convince them on the advent of euro on the said date.
