RIGA, Dec 3 - Harmony Center could propose a referendum on the introduction of the euro in Latvia, Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center) told LNT morning show "900 sekundes" today.

Usakovs emphasized the necessity of the euro in Latvia, but questioned the country's euro adoption date. The mayor drew attention to public skepticism regarding the euro and explained that the people of Latvia should be given a chance to voice their opinions through a referendum.

The mayor also stressed the importance of euro adoption costs. As an example, he mentioned the cost of budget consolidation, which improved Latvia's economic indexes but drove 200,000 residents away from the country.

Harmony Center's Saeima Group Chairman Janis Urbanovics is convinced that the introduction of the euro is inevitable and 2014 could be the best time to do so. "However, it is wrong to fail to understand that the eurozone, where there are currently so many problems, awaits us with arms wide open. We should make use of what has been done to our country, the fact that we have sacrificed 300,000 of our best people who have left for other European countries, so it is we who should set conditions," says the politician.

Urbanovics believes that Latvia will join the eurozone if it wants to, "Even with some figures fluctuating a bit, the eurozone needs us more than we need the eurozone," adds the politician.

As reported, Latvia plans to join the eurozone on January 1, 2014.
