Latvians most skeptical regarding gays, lesbians or bisexuals in highest elected political positions

RIGA, Nov 27 - Latvian residents are the most skeptical in the European Union regarding having gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the highest elected political positions in the country, according to a survey carried out by the European Commission's social research center "Eurobarometer".

Using a scale from one to ten, where one means "totally uncomfortable" and ten - "totally comfortable", Latvian residents assess such a possibility with 3.2 points, the lowest figure in the EU. The average figure in the EU is 6.6 points.

Estonians and Lithuanians are not as skeptical as Latvians in this regard. They assessed having gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the highest elected political positions in their countries with 4.7 and 4.1 points respectively.

Danes are the most comfortable with gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the highest elected political positions - 9.1 points.

Latvians are also the most skeptical regarding having transgender and transsexual persons in the highest elected political positions in the country - 2.8 points, compared to Europe's average of 5.7 points.
