A handful of members of KPV LV political party have decided to pick Didzis Šmits as their presidential candidate, as reported by lsm.lv. Deputies do not hide the fact that with this step they wanted to engage in presidential elections.

Šmits refrained from commenting on the situation in his conversation with public broadcaster Latvian Television, saying only that he will say more on Monday, when it is planned to officially submit the candidacy application.

Meanwhile, Saeima opposition has submitted a proposal to move presidential elections from 29 may to 5 June. Chairman of the Union of Greens and Farmers Armands Krauze explained that the meeting should take place 5 June so that there would be more time for debates and so that society has more time to learn more about candidates.

34 deputies of UGF, Harmony and non-party deputies, as well as KPV LV opposition deputies have signed in support the proposal of moving presidential elections to 5 June, the politician said.

As it is known, the majority of Saeima’s coalition parties have agreed to support European Court of Justice Judge Egils Levits as their presidential candidate, whereas UGF has picked ombudsman Juris Jansons as their candidate.

Latvia’s President Raimonds Vējonis has announced he has no plans to stand candidate for a second term.
