Rail Baltica’s high-speed trains will course once every two hours

It is planned that Rail Baltica high-speed trains will course once every two hours, according to Rail Baltica representative Līva Biseniece.


It is expected that high-speed trains travelling from Tallinn to Warsaw and from Tallinn to Vilnius will course up to four times a day in each direction from the moment the railway line is opened and up to six times a day in each direction after ten years. Additionally, up to ten trains will course on Vilnius – Kaunas – Warsaw route every day, Biseniece explains.
 

«As a result of this, Rail Baltica will provide fast railway connectivity with Baltic capitals with an interval of two hours,» says Biseniece.
 

The plan also includes two night trains: Tallinn – Riga – Kaunas – Warsaw – Berlin and Vilnius – Kaunas – Warsaw – Berlin.
 

Every thirty minutes passengers will be able to travel to and from Riga Central Station to Riga International Airport. This trip will take 10 minutes, Rail Baltica Representatives promise.
 

The interval of high-speed trains is based on the assessment of opinions from passengers, which will be used for the development Rail Baltica Train Movement Plan 2026-2056. The plan was developed by German ETC Gauff Mobility GmbH in cooperation with Danish COWI A/S and German Institut fur Bahntechnik GmbH. This plan reflects a modern and integrated approach that provides for market demand as the main criterion to be used to compile train movement schedules, says Biseniece.
 

«Rail Baltica railway movement plan’s main goal is ensuring infrastructure is able to satisfy short-term and long-term demand. This plan will help use Rail Baltica line efficiently from day one, as well as to ensure passenger and freight transport services can be increased after the first couple of years of use,» comments RB Rail Systems and Operations Department’s manager Jean-Marc Bedmar.
 

As noted in the Train Movement Plan, two to three cargo trains with maximum speed of 120 km/h will be able to use Rail Baltica infrastructure every hour. The approved load is 25 tonnes and permitted length of trains is up to 1,050 m. To promote development of freight transports, it is planned to build three large multifunctional terminals – in Muuga (Estonia), Salaspils (Latvia) and Palemonas (Lithuania), explains Rail Baltica representative.
 

It is planned that 80% of freight trains that will use Rail Baltica will be intermodal ones. This will provide logistics operators with an opportunity to replace road transports with railway transports.
 

Rail Baltica railway traffic plan’s evaluation reveals the potential for development of regional railways in Baltic States with maximum traffic speed of 200 km/h. This means Rail Baltica line can be used not only for international passenger transports, but also regional and cross-border transports, explains Biseniece.
 

For example, the plan identified sufficient passenger flow potential to sustain regional passenger transports from Bauska to Riga and from Salacgriva to Riga in Latvia, from Pērnava to Tallinn in Estonia, and from Marijampolis through Kaunas to Vilnius in Lithuania. On top of that, during the plan’s development process experts identified a sufficient level of demand for cross-border regional traffic. Biseniece said development of regional traffic using Rail Baltica will require additional research and decisions on a national level in each country.
 

Rail Baltica Tran Movement Plan is based on research on passenger and freight demand in Rail Baltica corridor, as well as define train movement schedules and types of trains that will be used there. The plan includes provisional information, indicative infrastructure maintenance and rolling stock maintenance infrastructure, as well as detailed railway plans. The main solutions detailed in the plan will be used in the project’s future stages.
