Baltic states skeptical about new Brexit talks

The Baltic states are skeptical about efforts by the UK to reopen negotiations with the European Union about the terms of the British withdrawal from the bloc, Baltic leaders said to reporters on February 4.

On Monday, a prime ministerial meeting of the Baltic Council of Ministers was held in Riga with the participation of Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and Estonian Ambassador to Latvia Arti Hilpus.

Asked to comment the rumours that the UK allegedly has addressed the Baltic States for them to sand for the continuation of the Brexit talks, the Baltic leaders responded that the UK had not contacted the three governments.

The Prime Ministers of Latvia and Lithuania were of the view that the hard work of Brexit talks has already been done and the remaining member states should stand together.

Hilpus, who substituted the absent Estonian Prime Minister, Jüri Ratas, said that in case London is able to provide arguments to reopen the talks, the member states will have to decide about it.
