On Thursday, 6 December, the Saeima supported in the final reading amendments to the Law on Remuneration of Officials and Employees of State and Self-government Authorities, which provide for increasing wages for judges and prosecutors.

Changes to the law are needed in relation to the 26 October ruling of the Constitutional Court, in which regulations regarding methods for calculation of wages for judges were found non-compliant with the law. Currently the wage of a district court judge is EUR 1,966. According to the Constitutional Court, this amount does not fully ensure financial independence for judges. In accordance with the ruling, non-compliant regulations will no longer be in force as of 1 January 2019, BNN was told by Saeima’s press-service.

The proposed solution provides for more competitive wages. It will help motivate young professionals to follow careers as judges and prosecutors, as stated in the annotation to the law.

Following approval of amendments, the country’s economic development will be taken into account when calculating monthly wages.

This remuneration system will be applied to Saeima elected and approved officials, as well as Saeima and municipal council deputies.

Amendments provide that the Cabinet of Ministers is to evaluate remuneration systems of state and municipal officials, as well as judges and prosecutors, no rarer than once every four years to ensure more balanced wages between state sectors.

Changes will come to force 1 January 2019.
