The combined offer submitted by Sweden’s Stockholm and Latvia’s Sigulda was officially added on to the short-list of 2026 Olympics host candidates by the International Olympics Committee on Tuesday, 9 October.

As previously reported, aside from Stockholm and Sigulda, offers from Canada’s Calgary, Italy’s Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo were also approved for the short-list.

If organization of Olympic Games is entrusted to Stockholm, lube, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions will be organized in Sigulda.

The host country for 2026 Olympic Games will be decided in September next year.

Last week the International Olympics Committee crossed from the list Turkey’s Erzurum. With that, only three candidates remain.

Japan’s Sapporo withdrew its candidacy after the earthquake. Residents of Switzerland’s Canton of Valais held a referendum around the beginning of June. Results showed that residents do not want the city of Sion to be a candidate. One month after that, Austria’s Graz and Sładminsty also decided to withdraw their combined offer.

A similar referendum is scheduled to take place in Calgary in November. Residents there cannot seem to decide if they want the Olympic Games there.

South Korea’s Pyeongchang, which is the host of this year’s Winter Olympics, had only two competitors – Munich (Germany) and Annecy (France). China’s Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
