In September 2018, teachers’ minimal wage amount will be EUR 30 larger – EUR 719, as decided by Latvia’s Cabinet of Ministers.

By raising minimal wage for teachers, the government completes the schedule for the increase of teachers’ minimal wages throughout 1 September 2018 to 31 December 2022. According to this schedule, the lowest minimal wage amount for teachers will be EUR 710 starting from 1 September 2018.

In accordance with the plan, wages of heads of education institutions, vocational or professional education institutions will also increase. This means that wages of workers of education institutions with 100 to 500 students will increase by EUR 50.

Legislative regulations will apply to approximately 24,129 general education educators; 12,159 pre-school educators; 2,426 vocational education educators; 7,350 interest group educators, as well as 4,144 vocational guidance teachers.

Additional funding needed to ensure teachers’ pay increase to EUR 710 will be EUR 6.168 million starting from 1 September 2018, EUR 17.588 million in 2019 and the same amount every year onward.

To ensure the increase of wages, the government supported the proposal to provide Education and Science Ministry with funding of EUR 2,844,345 by performing funding division among budget programmes, sub-programmes and other planned activities, as well as diverting EUR 3,232,704 from the state budget for emergencies.

Because additional funding calculation was performed based on the number of students and structure as of 1 September 2017, and because the number of students was predicted to increase by 3,362 for the next school year, which would require allocation of additional funding worth EUR 1,056,516 in 2018, Education and Science Ministry will submit a proposal for allocation of more funding for the budget for emergencies.

The last time minimal wage of teachers was raised was two years ago, when a new teacher pay model was approved. Development commenced in 2014, when Ina Druviete was Latvia’s Education Minister.
