On Tuesday, 15 May, Saeima’s Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee decided to form a work group to develop an alternative legislative draft to help limit access to propaganda television channels and reduce their proportion in offers of television service providers.

On 3 May, the committee received a legislative draft with proposed amendments to the Electronic Mass Media Law prepared by parliamentary deputies. The committee also received an initiative from the National Electronic Mass Media Council. During the meeting, members of the committee decided to form a work group that would prepare an alternative legislative draft together with Culture Ministry, the media council and industry experts. The committee also plans to ask Finance Ministry and Transport Ministry to provide comments on proposed amendments, as confirmed by Saeima’s press-service.

«Hateful and fabricated lies about the country are often reported in the information and electronic mass-media. It is propaganda that blackens and undermines Latvia’s reputation. Limitation of such information is a matter of national security. With that, industry experts and deputies should work together and develop effective regulations, said chairperson of Saeima’s Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee Inese Laizāne.»
