The court has rejected the request to lift security measured applied to the governor of the Bank of Latvia Ilmārs Rimšēvičs. Because of that, he considers turning to international institutions, as confirmed by his lawyer Saulvedis Vārpiņš.

Rimšēvičs’ lawyer asked the court to lift two security measures applied by Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau – prohibition to perform duties and leave the country.

Because all options for appealing security measures have been exhausted, Rimševičs’ defence no considers turning to international institutions. Vārpiņš did not mention the name of the institution.

On Tuesday, 27 February, Rimšēvičs mentioned in an interview to LTV that he started going to work on Monday. Vārpiņš mentioned that his clients complies with security measures and does not perform duties associated with the security measure. «My client performs formal duties not covered by security measures,» said Vārpiņš.

BNN had previously reported that after his arrest, Ilmārs Rimšēvičs was applied with a security measure that prohibits him from performing his duties. This was confirmed by Latvia’s Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis after an extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Rimšēvičs is held suspect of demanding and accepting a bribe worth at least EUR 100,000.

Kučinskis mentioned that the government listened to the report from the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (CPCB) in regards to Rimšēvičs’ arrest. He mentioned that the bureau will provide more detailed information on this matter once the investigation allows it.

«The governor of the Bank of Latvia was applied with a security measure on Monday, 19 February. As bare minimum, he will not be allowed to perform his official duties,» Kučinskis said.
