Latvian president wants to see Maizītis re-approved as chief of Constitution Protection Bureau

Latvia’s President Raimonds Vējonis has no objections against re-approval of Jānis Maizītis as the chief of Constitution Protection Bureau for a second term. Vējonis believes Maizītis is the most capable candidate.

In his interview to Rīta Panorāma, Vējonis mentioned that he has no objections against Maizītis if he were re-approved as chief of the bureau. The final decision is for the Saeima to make.

The National Security Council plans to discuss the next head of the bureau in February, the president said.

When asked if Maizītis is supportable for a second term, Vējonis said potential candidates will be discussed during the next meeting of the National Security Council.

«Then it will be made known. The council will make its decision clear,» said the president.

If Maizītis is not offered a second term, Saeima deputy Gunārs Kūtris would be ready to replace him. He confirmed this in an interview to 900 seconds programme of LNT.

As reported, the majority of the politicians are reluctant about commenting on the matter regarding the next term of the CPB chief. Those that have a position on this matter are positive about entrusting management of the bureau to Maizītis. His current term ends in May. Candidates are picked by the National Security Council. The final decision is for the Saeima to make.

Maizītis mentioned in his interview to Latvijas Radio that he hasn’t received any serious offers to remain in his post for a second term.
