Stores in Latvia will no longer provide plastic bags free of charge

To contribute to the reduction of the volume of waste and encourage more rational use of resources, Latvia’s Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry has developed a new proposal for Packaging Law. Changes state that plastic bags will no longer be provided in different stores free of charge starting from 1 January 2019.

«At the same time, there are no plans for any specific fee on light plastic bags intended primarily for packaging food products,» the ministry notes.

Businesses will have to provide light plastic bags that are not made of biodegradable plastic, as well as inform consumers about the need to reduce consumption of primary packaging and shopping bags.

It is planned that this measure will motivate residents to use plastic bags more reasonably and invite buyers to choose alternatives – environment-friendly packaging and less negative impact on the environment.
