Latvian Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola has officially applied for the post of president of Eurogroup, as confirmed by the minister.

The minister submitted her application and motivation letter today. Names of all applicants will be published on 1 December. The vote will take place on Monday, 4 December.

Reizniece-Ozola says she decided to become a candidate because during talks with colleagues from other countries she heard many compliments to Latvia as an example for compliance with fiscal discipline. Also the finance minister is confident that representation in such an important institution would improve Baltic States’ representation on Europe’s political map.

Finance Minister says there are many challenges ahead in the finance field. This includes matters associated with economic and monetary union. «There is a lot left to do,» added Reizniece-Ozola.

She refrained from predicting the possible election results. The minister admits that the decision will likely be made by the largest parties represented in the European Parliament – European People’s Party and Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

In October 2017, the current president of Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloem announced his plan to leave this post in January 2018. Reizniece-Ozola said she had discussed her possible candidacy with colleagues from the EU Finance Ministers Council.

Reizniece-Ozola’s name was previously mentioned by international media reporting on the minister’s accomplishments. In January, The Banker magazine of British Financial Times declared Reizniece-Ozola as Europe’s best Finance Minister of the Year.

«With an eye on both fiscal consolidation and growth, Ms Reizniece-Ozola not only has a strict fiscal stance but is also contributing to positive economic results for Latvia with an ambitious structural reform program,» The Banker wrote.

In December 2016, Reizniece-Ozola was put on 21st place on the list of European policy-reformers compiled by American Politico. Describing the minister, Politico mentioned her chess skills and strict dedication for sorting out Latvia’s finances. The media also mentioned the influence of Aivars Lembergs, nick-named the Donald Trump version in Latvia, on Reizniece-Ozola’s political career. Nevertheless, the minister has announced her commitment to preserve her independence.
