Unity member Inese Lībiņa-Egnere may be appointed as the new head of Saeima’s National Security Committee, as reported by Latvijas Avīze.

The committee is currently led by Solvita Āboltiņa who has promised to lay down her deputy mandate this year. Initially Unity offered the aforementioned post to the head of the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee Ainars Latkovskis, but he refused and instead recommended Lībiņa-Egnere as an alternative candidate. She said that «the faction has yet to discuss this matter».

Lībiņa-Egnere currently works as an associate of the Saeima speaker. This means she has access to limited access information.

Laimdota Straujuma is also unofficially mentioned as a potential candidate for the post. «Discussions about this matter will be carried out by the board. We also expect talks with partners of the coalition. It is too soon to discuss any specific candidates, but I can confirm that the committee will not remain leaderless after Āboltiņa’s departure,» said Unity chairman Arvils Ašeradens.

The National Security Committee has a representative from every faction in the Saeima.
