Kampars: Unity is accused of not taking interest in society’s woes aka the arrogance created by Āboltiņa’s symbol

«Unity is currently in the middle of enormous changes – structural and very deep changes. We are accused of not taking an interest in society’s problems. Most also accuse Unity of being arrogant. We understand that this is associated with the party’s activities until now and the faction’s former leader Solvita Āboltiņa,» BNN was told by Unity’s director general Artis Kampars.

He says in society’s opinion Āboltiņa symbolizes many negative characteristics. He says the party has to accept this and let someone else take charge. Unity is satisfied with Āboltiņa’s departure from the party; it is believed that this is the most significant change. «It’s not like people will love us immediately. Nevertheless, without her, Unity has to propose a different kind of policy and focus on people, because this has been the biggest problem until now. And Āboltiņa was Unity’s symbol we had to replace,» said Kampars.

Still, he welcomes the politician’s contribution to politics, adding: «She truly has done much for the good of this country.»

«It is clear that we now understand the main problem well – society does not like her even though there are no scandals or serious violations involving her. There is a kind of irrational belief about her as a personality and how she works in politics. Perhaps it was Āboltiņa’s symbol of arrogance that did not sit with people all that well.»

Incompatible politicians and political ideas ‘under one roof’

Kampars admits that the party’s biggest disputes appeared over the inability to agree on ways to continue the party’s function and Unity’s position on certain matters. This is why many politicians are currently leaving the party.

«The party had two noteworthy politicians – Solvita Āboltiņa and Ilze Viņķele – who are equally ambitious, knowledgeable and confident. They could not work together, but there was more of a personal dislike between them. This created major tension within the party. Of course, lack of coordination and agreements were present for certain problems within Unity, but it was the personal dislike and inability to work in a team that created problems for everyone.»

According to Kampars, this experience will serve as an example for the party in the future – to make sure incompatible politicians and political ideas do not end up under the same roof and cause another crack within the party.

Largest challenge – proving the party’s internal change of values in the eyes of society

Unity’s political leaders replace one another, which makes things confusing for society: to trust or not to trust this party. Kampars does not deny this, adding that Unity’s current goal is developing a declaration of values for Unity. This means it is possible society will be able to see the new Unity in December.

«I would say that we are returning to our basic values: openness, professionalism, competence and policy focused on growth and economic development. Yes, we are a right-wing party that does not talk of dividing of anything. We say where it is possible to earn and how to be successful on the global arena. This is approximately how we could start forming our party’s future vision. Unfortunately, it will not be easy to change the negative impression left on the party.»

Also Kampars says that Latvia’s political spectrum has to understand that society’s trust in democracy, in this political parties system, drops all the time.
