On 3 November, Latvian Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis participated in the opening ceremony of World Food India expo in Deli, India. In his speech, Kučinskis said that food production is one of the most important sectors of Latvia’s economy.

«This industry in Latvia has adapted its products to the needs of modern consumers. Demand for Latvian products continues growing in different export markets. This is why I propose combining my country’s good practice with India’s scale,» said Kučinskis.

The expo also emphasized the modern globalization trend. «Globalization on its own is not enough to ensure economic growth and welfare for society – it is no less important to pay attention to food safety,» said the prime minister.

«Latvia already develops distribution centres for India’s export products headed for EU member states. It would be a new Amber Way that connected Baltic and Indian people thousands of year ago,» added the prime minister.

The opening ceremony was also attended by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi, as well as ministers from Denmark, Germany and Italy.

It is reported that the expo in Deli is also attended by businessmen interested in entering India’s market and its trade networks that would assist with Latvian products reaching their end consumers, as well as study market specifics and consumers’ desires.

Kučinskis will remain on his visit to India until 6 November. During his stay, he will hold meetings with India’s President Ram Nath Kovind and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi.
