A single, well-coordinated institution should be entrusted to work with people provided with refugee status in Latvia, said Latvian Interior Affairs Minister Rihards Kozlovskis in an interview to Rīta panorama programme of LTV.

He believes that a single institution would have an easier time coordinating housing, work, healthcare and child education matters for families that decide to remain in Latvia for life.

Kozlovskis admits that the number of refugees that have been successfully resettled in Latvia is very small. According to him, this is because refugees desire better social conditions and the inability to find housing in Latvia and become socially and economically active in the country.

The minister says a pilot project will be realized soon to ensure participation of municipalities in the search for housing and employment opportunities. Still, only some families would benefit from this particular initiative.

So far, 346 people have been relocated to Latvia as part of EU asylum seeker resettlement programme. There are many asylum-seekers that arrive in Latvia on their own, and the number of such people is especially large this year, says Kozlovskis.

He also said that most of them are not provided refugee status.
