Rinkēvičs and EU Budget and Human Resource Commissioner discuss Europe’s budget

Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with EU Budget and Human Resources Commissioner Günther Oettinger on Wednesday, 1 November, to discuss matters related to the next EU budget and Latvia’s interests.

During their meeting, the minister mentioned Latvia’s most important priorities – Cohesion policy, accessibility of EU structural funds after 2020, the Common Agricultural Policy and the need for equalization of direct payments and additional funding for countryside development, as well as future funding for EU programmes like research and innovations development instrument, European infrastructure connectivity instrument and Erasmus+.

Rinkēvičs emphasized that EU funding is a major stimulus for Latvia’s growth, whereas convergence will assist with introducing a unified view in such major matters like migration, social standards and worker posting directive.

Commissioner Oettinger voiced satisfaction with Latvia’s rapid development and the progress that was achieved since the restoration of Latvia’s independence and joining of the European Union in 2004. «Latvia has accomplished a lot, and it was possible thanks to Cohesion Policy and EU funding.» Oettinger said the Cohesion Policy and EU funding should remain available after 2020.

During his visit, Oettinger also met with Saeima European Committee representatives, Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola and Agriculture Minister Jānis Dūklavs. The commissioner said that Latvian government is consequent in its decisions and is unified in the position regarding the most important priorities in the EU multi-year budget after 2020.

Oettinger also participated in public debates with representatives of civil society.

The institution responsible for the EU multi-year budget in Latvia is the Foreign Affairs Ministry. In cooperation with Finance Ministry, Agriculture Ministry and other ministries, the Foreign Affairs Ministry manages and coordinates the process for the preparation for talks about EU finance scheme after 2020.
