Latvian Diabetes Association invites residents to come to Riga’s 2nd Gymnasium from 10:00 to 14:00 on 4 November. Residents will be able to check their health free of charge and receive advice from experienced specialists.

According to World Health Organization, there are 422 million people suffering from sugar diabetes in the world, 80 million in Europe and 85,000 in Latvia. Diabetes is also the main cause behind blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes and amputation of legs. One person dies from diabetes complications every ten seconds in the world.

WHO predicts that sugar diabetes will be the seventh main cause of death in the world in 2030.

On the World Diabetes Day, residents will be able to check their blood sugar level, bone mineral density, measure blood pressure, and determine body weight and fat in Riga free of charge.

Latvian Diabetes Association president and endocrinologist Ingvars Rasa comments: «It is worth mentioning that people with sugar diabetes and other risk factors, such as age above 45, excessive weight, increased blood pressure, and increased level of cholesterol are under the risk of getting cardiovascular diseases. There are many such patients in Latvia, and only some of them check their glucose levels once a year.»

He continues: «Doctors in Latvia diagnose 7,000 new cases every year. On top of that, the number of unregistered diabetes patients is the same as registered. This means the actual number of diabetes patients is twice as large! A timely discovered sugar diabetes makes it possible to reduce complications from this disease in the future.»
