Latvian Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis participated in the conference titled ‘National Development Plan 2020 – half-way through: can Latvian achieve its goals?’ on Friday, 27 October. During his speech, Kučinskis noted that for Latvia to experience economic breakthrough, it is important to establish specific goals.

He admits that since the conception of the National Development Plan (NAP2020), this document has become a wish list, because every industry wanted to be mentioned there. He added that the main focus has remained unchanged.

«The main focus is detailed in the government’s action plan. The education reform and other priorities are actively realized by the government. It was established at the beginning of last year that it is important to make sure that GDP growth in Latvia is 5%. Work is being performed to achieve this goal,» said Kučinskis.

The prime minister is confident that productivity and exports will be the decisive factors in the accomplishment of NAP2020 goals. He also said there is no need to waste energy reviewing NAP2020, because the development plan’s main priorities remain topical and reachable.

NAP2020 is Latvia’s medium-term development document. The goal of the document is reaching an agreement in regards to the most important medium-term priorities, directions and achievement indexes. NAP2020 was developed through cooperation of Cross-Sectoral Coordination Centre’s experts with the government’s social partners, ministries, planning regions and municipalities.
