President: transition to state language in education should be gradual

Raimonds Vējonis/president.lv.
Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis supports the initiative to transition towards education only in state language in principle. However, he believes the process should be performed gradually.

As the president mentioned in his interview to Latvijas Radio, if such a reform is implemented immediately, there could be problems with preparing teachers of national minority schools so that they are able to perform teaching practices in Latvian language.

The president believes education in the country should move towards state language «because Latvian language is the only state language in Latvia».

The president believes there has not been sufficient political will to complete changes to the very end until now.

Looking into the first protect against this reform, Vējonis got the impression that it was not aimed against the reform, but rather based on certain political goals.

As for the matter of provision of non-citizen status to children, Vējonis said his thoughts have not changed. He believes the non-citizen institute is a leftover from the Soviet Era, which should be abolished. Children should be provided citizenship of the country they were born in. Non-citizen status should not be provided any more, as this was a solution for the transition period, says the president.

The president does not intend to send this initiative to the Saeima again. Nevertheless the possibility remains for round two after parliamentary elections. In relation to older non-citizens, the system will not be changed: their status is in their hands.
