To avoid shaking the government, Kučinskis skirts around sensitive citizenship matter

Latvian Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis decided not to risk stability of his government. Because of that, he decided not to into detail about Latvian President Raimonds Vējoņis’ proposal to stop issuing non-citizen status to newborns in Latvia, which is something the National Alliance objects to.

«We need a strict government,» said the politician in an interview to Rīta panorama programme of LTV, adding that Vējoņis’ proposal was not reviewed in detail to avoid creating political instability and turning attention from the next year’s budget.

Kučinskis doubts the president’s initiative would have put at risk the country’s security. He says it is just not the best time for this initiative. With that, it is not possible to tell if a hard no will be said to this proposal forever.

The prime minister hopes for support from coalition parties’ promise to support the budget project and avoid voicing unexpected changes to the budget even though one or two matters may yet be discussed in the parliament.

Kučinskis says the budget project has been discussed by all three coalition parties. They were told about the situation that the proposed budget does not include funding reserves to be divided in the Saeima. The prime minister is confident that the government uses the state finances very responsibly. Because of that, he does not agree with Fiscal Discipline Council’s voiced criticisms that finances saved in the state budget are irresponsibly used to cover everyday expenses.

When asked about healthcare funding legislative draft, Kučinskis said he sees no reasons for concerns from doctors about any unexpected last-moment changes to the funding to be allocated for healthcare. According to the politician, the most important aspect is that the document clearly states movement towards allocating 4% of GDP to healthcare.
