Latvian Interior Affairs Minister Rihards Kozlovskis has been asked to become a candidate for the post of chairman of Unity. However, he is not ready to speak in regards to his readiness to take this post.

The minister does not deny the fact that he has been asked to candidate by members of Unity faction and fellow party members.

He also says that two other candidates have confirmed their intention to take over the reins in Unity – the current head of Unity Edvards Smiltens and Riga City Council deputy Vilnis Kirsis. The decision regarding their approval as candidates will be made before the end of the week, said the minister.

When asked if he would like to take this post, Kozlovskis said he would rather not speculate on this matter.

As it is known, Smiltens had previously said he has no intention of becoming a candidate to lead the party if Solvita Aboltina continues working in the party.

The politician said he and Aboltina have different opinion in regards to the changes that should be performed in the party. He is confident changes should be massive. He believes Unity should not be salvaged – rather reconstructed from the inside.

Kirsis, meanwhile, considers becoming a candidate for the post of chairman of Unity.

BNN had previously reported that Unity has plans to re-elect its management at the August congress. Andris Piebalgs, the party’s current leader, has said he has no plans to become a candidate. Edvards Smiltens, deputy head of Unity’s Saeima faction, stepped down on 21 July.
