RIGA, Nov 20 (LETA) - A congress of non-citizens of Latvia will be held at the end of February or the beginning of March next year, as the organizers of the event informed LETA.

A task force set up for the organization of the congress emphasizes that after the Central Election Commission's decision to halt signature collection for staging a referendum on automatic Latvian citizenship for all non-citizens of Latvia, "Saeima and the government of Latvia, as well as other authorities of Latvia, have no right to represent the interests of Latvia's non-citizens - about 300,000 residents."

"We wish to put an end to the current situation where non-citizens' interests are represented by politicians we have not elected," emphasize organizers of the congress. Non-citizens of Latvia have just one option left - to establish their own representation.

The task force's report says that a representative institution will be established during the non-citizen congress, which will represent non-citizens in the legal, political and economic areas.

One of the next steps during the organization of the congress will be issuing an appeal to all people who wish to take part in the movement for the protection of the interests of Latvia's non-citizens to register at "kongress.lv". Later on, regional committees will be set up all over Latvia, which will choose delegates to the first congress.

The task force for the organization of the congress includes businessman Valerijs Komarovs, economist Einars Graudins, lawyer Elizabete Krivcova and journalist Jurijs Aleksejevs.

As reported, the Central Election Commission decided on November 1 to not organize the second round of a signature drive for staging the referendum on automatic Latvian citizenship for all non-citizens of Latvia.
