Russia's Telkov takes "Grand Prix" at Riga Vitols' Piano Competition

RIGA, Oct 27 - Winning top honors at the IV Jazeps Vitols' International Piano Competition, announced last night, was Russia's Andrei Telkov.

In a contest that had no first or third place winners, sharing second place honors were pianists from Latvia and Lithuania - Antonina Suhova and Motiejus Bazaras.

The jury presented special awards to Suhova and Roxana Kenzheyeva for outstanding performance of a Vitols composition. One of two Japanese contenders - Ayane Matsura - was singled out for the best interpretation of Latvian Eriks Esenvalds' new work "Frozen Horizon".

The sixth competition featured 19 young pianists from nine countries, and the finale concert and awards presentation were held last night in the Great Guild.
