"Latvijas Gaze" opera awards ceremony due September 18

 RIGA, Sept 12 - The annual Latvian National Opera (LNO) awards ceremony and concert, sponsored by "Latvijas Gaze", will be held Wednesday evening, September 18.

The staging of Richard Wagner's cycle "The Ring of the Nibelung", marking the 200th anniversary of the composer, will be singled out as the season's greatest achievement.
"The Ring" operas were performed during the Riga Opera Festival this year, featuring top Latvian and foreign opera singers, proving the artistic maturity of the LNO.

Liene Kinca will be honored with the best female singer's award, but Egils Silins will take the spotlight as the best male singer.

LNO advisor on musical matters, composer Arturs Maskats said that last season was a period of outstanding artistic achievement for Kinca. Her debut in a number of operas met with critical acclaim.

Whereas Silins reaffirmed his reputation as an outstanding soloist and interpreter of Wagner's music, and Latvia should be proud of having an artist of this caliber, Maskats emphasized.

Zermena Heine-Vagnere will receive an award for lifetime achievement.

Heine-Vagnere was an LNO's top diva from 1950 to 1975, starring in a total of 39 roles. The other lifetime achievement award will go to baritone Vladimirs Okuns, who was performing at the LNO for forty seasons and also taught young singers.

Elga Skane, head of the LNO booking office, will also be honored for her longtime efforts. Skane began her career in 1966, she has worked as assistant director and administrator.
Sabine Guravska will receive the "Latvijas Gaze" Award as the best prima ballerina, whereas Ieva Racene will be honored for her professional debut last season.

Violist Silvija Krauze has been recognized as the best orchestra musician, while singer Marina Rebeka will receive an award for artistic achievement.

These are the 2013 "Latvijas Gaze" Award winners, in the meantime, the "Delfi" vote for opera-goers' favorite new production continues until September 16.
