Latvian ports' cargo turnover increases 9.3% in 2012

 RIGA, Jan 15 - Latvian ports' cargo turnover last year increased 9.3 percent from 2011, as Latvian Ports, Transit and Logistics Council informed the "Nozare.lv" business portal.
Latvian ports' cargo turnover in 2011 totaled 68.82 million tons, whereas last year Latvian ports handled a total of 75.19 million tons of cargo.
Riga Port accounted for almost a half of Latvian ports' cargo turnover with 36.05 million tons. Ventspils was in second place with 30.35 million tons and Liepaja in third with 7.43 million tons.
Of the large ports in Latvia, Liepaja Port recorded the steepest increase in cargo turnover - 53 percent. Ventspils Port's cargo turnover increased 6.7 percent last year, whereas Riga handled 5.9 percent more cargo.
Bulk cargo turnover made up 37.28 million tons last year, liquid cargo - 24.9 million tons, and general cargo - 12.96 million tons.
Bulk cargo turnover increased the most last year, by 10.5 percent, whereas liquid cargo turnover grew 7.9 percent and general cargo turnover 8.5 percent.
