Retail trade in Latvia grows more rapidly than average in Europe

Compared to the same month of 2017, retail trade turnover in Latvia grew by 3.5% in September 2018. This is more rapidly than the average in the European Union, according to data published by Eurostat.

A more rapid climb of retail trade when compared to the same month of 2017 was registered in Ireland (+10.2%), Lithuania (+7.9%), Poland (+6.5%), Hungary (+5.4%) and Slovenia (+5.2%). Retail trade in Estonia grew 3.2%.
 

Retail trade declines were registered in Malta (-0.4%), Italy (-1%), Spain and Austria (-1.5% in both), as well as Belgium (-2.2%).
 

Compared to September 2017, retail trade turnover in EU countries increased by roughly 1.5%, whereas retail trade turnover in Eurozone countries increased by 0.8%. At the same time, compared to August, retail trade volumes in EU declined 0.1% in September. No changes were recorded in Eurozone.
 

The most rapid increase in this period was recorded in Ireland (+2.9%), Latvia (+1.5%), Estonia (+1.4%) and Romania (+1.1%). Declines were registered in Italy (-0.3%), Spain (-0.6%), Belgium and UK (-0.8% in both), Austria (-1%) and Portugal (-1.7%).
 

No data is available for Greece, Croatia, Cyprus and Netherlands.
