Baltic railway companies agree on creation of a unified container train route

On Monday, 12 March, a meeting was held among the heads of Latvia’s, Lithuania’s and Estonia’s railway companies for the first time. Officials discussed the organization of an inter-modal Amber Trail container train route, as reported by Latvijas dzelzceļš.

Latvia’s railway company and its subsidiaries LDz Cargo and LDz Logistics, Lithuania’s Lietuvos geležinkeliai and Estonia’s EVR Cargo representatives agreed that it is necessary to join forces to speed up organization of the Šestokai-Riga-Tallinn.

For this to happen, a work group has agreed to develop a competitive tariff offer and train schedule, as well as prepare a service offer for cargo owners that do not use railway infrastructure to deliver goods.

Latvijas dzelzceļš president Edvīns Bērziņš comments: «A meeting has taken place. Its result is a good example of cooperation among Baltic States, and it has a great, and so far, unused potential. European railway infrastructure may open up new opportunities in the future, offering clients convenient and efficient cargo logistics services.»

In order to ensure successful development of a new container train route, participants of the meeting agreed to share their experience and consider an opportunity to provide clients with electronic document submission process.
