Freight and passenger traffic in Latvia up in first half-year of 2017

Compared to the first half of 2016, the volume of freights carried by land and pipelines increased by three million tonnes or 5.5 % in the first half of 2017.

In the first half of the year, the volume of freights carried by land transport and pipelines increased by three million tonnes or 5.5 %, while the freight turnover rose by 2.8 %, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

The volume of freights carried by rail went up by 0.3 million tonnes or 1.2 %, whereas the freight turnover grew by 6.3 %. The volume of freights carried by road increased by 2.9 million tonnes or 10.3 %, while freight turnover by 0.3 %.  The volume of oil products transported via the main oil products pipeline reduced by 5.6 %, whereas the freight turnover – by 5.5 %.

In the first half of 2017, freights transported to and from Latvian ports accounted for 34 million tonnes, which is 7 % more than during the first half of 2016.
 

There were 30.5 million tonnes of freights shipped from ports, which is 6.2 % more than during the first half of 2016.  The increase in the volume of freights shipped was facilitated by the rise of 2.7 million tonnes or 35.3 % in the volume of coal loaded onto ships, as well as of 11.9 % in the loaded freights in containers, and of 11.2 % in roll on/ roll off. Reduction in the volume of shipped freights was recorded in the freights of oil products (of 12.9 %), grain and grain products (15.3 %), timber (6.1 %), and mineral fertilisers (11.5 %).
 

The volume of freights received at ports increased by 14.6 %. This was mainly due to the increase in the unloaded freights in containers and roll on/ roll off (of 19.5 % and 11.3 %, respectively), as well as upturn in the volume of unloaded oil product freights (of 24.4 %).
 

Riga International Airport received and shipped 10.1 thousand tonnes of cargo, which is 2.8 % more than in the first half of 2016.
 

Over the year, passenger number in ports and airport went up, number of passengers carried by land stayed at the same level recorded previous year.

In the first half of 2017, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport almost did not change: 122.4 million passengers were carried, which is 0.1 % less than in the first half of 2016.
 

The number of passengers carried by rail grew by 2.3 %, that of passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines stayed at the previous level, whereas of passengers carried by urban electric transport decreased by 0.6 %.


The number of passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports with ferries accounted for 437.1 thousand, which is 33.7 % more than during the first half of 2016.
 

There were 34.8 thousand passengers who arrived at the Riga Passenger Terminal via cruise ships – 2.2 times more than during the respective period of the previous year.
 

The number of passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport constituted 2.7 million, which is 8.7 % more than in the first half of 2016.
